The LCM and HCF of two numbers are 84 and 21 respectively. If the ratio of two numbers is 1 : 4, then the larger among two numbers is:

Solution:

Let the two numbers are x and 4x
Then, product of two numbers = their LCM × HCF
∴

x × 4x = 84 × 21

⇒

4x^2 = 84 × 21

⇒

x^2 = 21 × 21

⇒

x = 21

∴ The largest number

= 4x = 4 × 21 = 84.
