On the children's day sweets were distributed equally among 540 children. But, on that day 120 children were absent. Hence, each child got 4 more sweets. How many sweets were to be distributed to each child originally?

Solution:

Number of sweets were distributed each children

=x

Total number of sweets

=540 x

......(i)
If 120 children were absent.
Then, total number of sweets

=420(x+4)

.....(ii)
Eq. (i) equal to Eq. (ii)

540 x=420(x+4)

9 x=7(x+4)

9 x-7 x=28

x=14
