Equation of the straight line passing through the point

and making intercepts in the ratio 2 : 3 on the axes is

Solution:

Let the x-intercept and y-intercept be 2k and 3k respectively.
Then, equation of the line is

x/{2k}+y/{3k}=1

3x+2y=6k

Since the line passes through point

(1,-5)

, we have

3×1+2×(-5)=6k

⇒6k=-7

∴ Equation of the line is

3x+2y+7=0
