Here, we have to find out the reason to used spokes in a cycle wheel. We know that, spokes transfers the mass of the wheel to periphery. That is, Spokes are used in cycle wheel in order to increase the moment of inertia by transferring the mass of the wheel to the periphery. The spokes to the cycle wheel increases the moment of inertia due to the increase in the distribution of mass. This opposes the change in the rotary motion of the wheel. Thus spokes fitted to the cycle wheel gives a steady motion. The spokes of cycle wheel increases its moment of inertia. The greater the moment of inertia, the more is the opposition to any change in uniform rotational motion. As a result cycle runs smoothly and steadily. Of the cycle wheels had no spokes, the cycle would be driven jerky and hence unsafe.
