Inactive nitrogen and argon gases are usually used in electric bulbs in order to increase the life of the filament. Chemically inactive gases aid in keeping the inside and outside pressures the same and prevent the bulb filament from burning because at a high temperature, the filament has to be stable and should not be affected by its surroundings.
