If the xylem of a plant is mechanically blocked, the upward movement of water and transportation of solutes will stop leading to the leaves. Xylem is a type of tissue in vascular plants that transports water and some soluble nutrients including minerals and inorganic ions from the roots to the rest of the plant. The phenomenon that allows xylem sap to flow upwards against gravity is called capillary action.
