Lateral meristem tissue is responsible for an increase of girth in the stem of a plant. It is found on the lateral side of the stem and root of a plant. It helps in lateral growth of the plants. The cells of this tissue generally remain young and immature due to continuous division. The examples of lateral meristematic tissues include vascular cambium and the cork cambium.
