Brihadiswara Temple, Tanjavur was built by the Chola King. Rajarajbuilt Brihadeshwar temple attributed to Lord Shiva. There are three great 11th and 12th century Temples built by Chola rulers i.e. Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, the Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikondacholisvaram and the Brihadisvara Temple atThanjavur. They represent creative achievement in the architecturalconception of the pure form of the Dravida type of temple which arenow known as the "Great Living Chola Temples".
