The ruins of the Vijayanagara at Hampi were brought to light in1800 by Colonel Colin Mackenzie. He worked for many years in theEast India Company and prepared the first survey maps of this site.His earlier information was based on the memories of the priest of theVirupaksha temple shrine of Pampadevi. The ruins at Hampiwere designated as ‘UNESCO World Heritage Site’ in 1986.
