Mataji Maharani Tapaswini set up Mahakali Pathshala in Kali Bari, Kolkata in 1893. She was one of the strongest proponents of female education in India. It was a completely indigenous school which did not rely on any assistance from the Britishers. The education of girls was carried out in such a way that they would be able to revive and regenerate the Hindu society.
