Coral reefs grow best in warm water (23° C–25° C). It prefers salty, clear and shallow water, where plenty of sunlight reaches to aid photosynthesis. It grows up to a depth of 91 metres, but grows poorly below 50 metres. It cannot grow in fresh water.
