Vellalars were originally an elite caste of Tamil agricultural landlords in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. They were the large landowners of the ancient Tamil society. They had close relations with different royal dynasties. Uzhavars were ordinary ploughmen. Adimais were the landless labourers.
