Ashok gets 26% marks in an examination but fails by 12 marks. Arush gets 43% marks which is 39 more than the passing marks.
FORMULA USED:
X% of a number Y = Y × X/100
If a number ‘Y’ is increased by X%, increased number = Y × (1 + X/100)
CALCULATION:
From the given statement,
Difference of marks of Arush and Ashok = 39 + 12 = 51
Let ‘x’ be the maximum marks of the examination.
So,
43% of x – 26% of x = 51
⇒ 17% of x = 51
⇒ x = 300
∴ Maximum marks of the examination = 300
Smart Trick
Difference in both marks = 51
Difference both percentages = 43% - 26% = 17%
Now,
17% = 51
⇒ 1% = 3
∴ 100% = 300
