The descent of the sacred river Ganges to earth from the heavens led by Bhagiratha is depicted in the form of relief sculpture on rock at Mahabalipuram in the Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu. It is shown on a giant open-air rock relief carved on two monolithic rock boulders. The waters of the Ganges are believed to possess supernatural powers.
