The first extant true arch is found in the Tomb of Ghiyas-ud-din Balban. He was the ninth Sultan of the Mamluk dynasty of Delhi. Balban was the greatest of the Slave kings. Balban was instrumental in the overthrow of Masud Shah, installing Nasiruddin Mahmud as Sultan and himself as his Vazier from 1246-65.
