The earlier name of Tokyo was Edo. It was the seat of power for the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. The city's name was formally changed to Tokyo, meaning eastern capital, in 1868, when Shogunate’s rule started weakening.
