The mandate of the scheme titled ‘Directly Observed Treatment, Short-Course (DOTS)’ launched by WHO is to ensure that patients complete their course of the drug. DOTS, also known as TB-DOTS, is a strategy recommended by WHO in 1994 for the control of TB epidemic. In DOTS, healthcare workers observe patients as they take their medicine. The DOTS programme is one of the most successful interventions to combat tuberculosis.
