(b) The substance used as moderator and coolant both in a nuclear reactor is heavy water.Heavy water contains a larger amount of the hydrogen isotope deuterium, rather than the common hydrogen-1 isotope that makes upmost of the hydrogen in normal water. It acts as a neutron moderator to slow down neutron’s effect in the nuclear reaction.
