A tractor is going at a speed of 36 km/h and a Jeep with a speed of 54 km/h overtakes the tractor which was 240 meters ahead of the Jeep. Now find the distance between the tractor and the jeep after 52 seconds.
Given: Jeep’s speed = 54 km/hr Tractor’s speed = 36 km/hr Distance between Jeep and tractor = 240 m. Concept used: Relative speed is the difference between the motions of two objects when two objects move in the same direction. Formula used: Speed = Distance/Time Calculations: The speed of Jeep = 54 km/hr Now the speed of Jeep in m/s= 54 × (5/18) = 3 × 5 = 15 m/s The speed of tractor = 36 km/hr Now the speed of tractor in m/s = 36 × (5/18) = 2 × 5 = 10 m/s Then relative speed of Jeep and tractor ⇒ (The speed of Jeep –The speed of tractor) ⇒ 15 – 10 = 5 m/s Now the distance between Jeep and tractor = 240 m. Then time is taken by Jeep to overtake the tractor ⇒ 240/5 = 48 sec Distance covered by Jeep and tractor in (52 – 48) = 4 sec Distance covered by Jeep in 4 sec ⇒ 15 × 4 = 60 m. Distance covered by the tractor in 4 sec ⇒ 10 × 4 = 40 m Now the distance between the Jeep and tractor = 60 – 40 = 20 m. ∴ the distance between the car and the bus after 52 seconds is 20 meters.
