Solution:

Let the side of the square be 100 cm.
∴ Area

= \side^2 = 10000 \cm^2

After increase, side of the square = 100 + 40 = 140 cm
∴ Area

= 40 × 140 = 19600 \cm^2

∴ Percentage increase

={19600- 10000 }/10000×100

=96%
