Connotation refers to the set of positive and negative associations that most words naturally carry with them, while denotation is the precise, literal, explicit definition of a word as listed in a dictionary. For instance, ‘use’ literally means, ‘operate to achieve something’. Words such as ‘utilise’ and ‘employ’ give its positive connotation while ‘exploit’ gives its negative connotation.
Words gain positive or negative connotations depending upon the social, cultural, and personal experiences of individuals.
