Two taps P and Q can separately fill a cistern in 12 minutes and 18 minutes respectively, while a third tap R can empty it in 9 minutes. In what time (in minutes) w ill the cistern be full, if all the three taps are opened together w hen the cistern is empty?

Solution:

Part of the cistern filled in one minute

=\;{1}/{12}+\;{1}/{18}-\;{1}/{9}=1=\;{3+2-4}/{36}=\;{1}/{36}

∴ The cistern will be full in 36 minutes.
