Two pipes A and B can fill a tank in 24 minutes and 30 minutes respectively. Both pipes are opened simultaneously but after 5 minutes A is turned off. After how much more time will the tank be filled?

Solution:

Rate of filling of pipes A and B are 1/24 and 1/30 respectively. Let the tank be filled in t minutes after pipe A is closed.

⇒{5}/{24}+{5+t}/{30}=1 ⇒ 5+t=30 ×(1-{5}/{24})=23.75

⇒t = 23.75-5 = 18.75
