Pipes P and Q can fill a cistern in 12 minutes and 15 minutes respectively. Both are opened together but after 3 minutes P is turned off. After how much more time (in minutes) will the cistern be filled?

Solution:

Rates of filling the tank for pipes P and Q per minute are 1/12 and 1/15 respectively. Let the total time to fill the tank be t.
Given that

3/12+t/15=1⇒t=11.25

After pipe P is turned off, the tank was filled in 8.25 minutes.
