Solution:

Rate downstream = 8.5 + 3.5 = 12 km/hour
Rate upstream = 8.5 - 3.5 = 5 km/hour
Let the distance covered = x km

x/{12}+x/5+1

{42}/{60}

x({5+12}/{60})

{17}/{10}

x = 6 km
Hence, the place is 6 km far.
