Speed downstream = $\frac{1}{\mathit{y}}$ km/hour
12x + 18y = 3 ……(i)
36x + 24y = $\frac{13}{2}$ ... (i)
Solving (i) and (ii) we get,
y = $\frac{1}{12}$
So downstream speed = 12 km/hour
x = $\frac{1}{8}$
So upstream speed = 8 km/hour
Speed of the current = $\frac{12-8}{2}$ = 2 km/hour
