A thief started running away from a police at a speed of 40 km/hr on a stolen bike. A policeman standing on a check post realized this after 15 minutes that the bike is actually stolen and gives chase at 60 km/hr. Thief takes 18 minutes to realize that police is chasing him. Hence the double his speed. Simultaneously police also doubles his speed. What distance the police has to travel to catch the thief?

Solution:

Distance covered by the thief in 15 minutes =

40 × {15}/{60}

= 10 km
Distance covered by the police in 18 minutes, when the relative speeds 20 km/hour =

20 × {18}/{60}

= 6 km
Time taken by the thief and the police to cover x km and by (x + 4) km respectively is the same.

{x+4}/{120}

x/{80}

80x + 320 = 120x
40x = 320
x = 8 km
So, distance covered by the police = 6 + 8 + 4
= 18 km
