Points ‘A’ and ‘B’ are 70 km apart on a highway. A car starts from ‘A’ and another from ‘B’ at the same time. If they travel in the same direction, they meet in 7 hours, but if they travel towards each other, they meet in one hour. Find the speed of the two cars (in km/hr).

Solution:

While travelling in the same direction, they meet in 7 hours
⇒ B covers 7y distance and
A covers 7x distance
7x = 70 + 7y
⇒ x - y = 10 ......(i)
While travelling towards each other, they will cover 70 km distance.
Using relative speed concept,

{70}/{x+y}

= 1 [given]
x + y = 70 ......(ii)
Using (i) and (ii) we get:
x - y = 10
x + y = 70
⇒ x = 40 km/hr and y = 30 km/hour
