The major ingredient (∼51%) in Portland cement is tricalcium silicate Ca3SiO5, also called C3S ). It is mainly responsible for the early strength development of cement by rapidly reacting with water to form calcium silicate hydrate and calcium hydroxide. Its high percentage ensures quick setting and hardening of concrete structure.
