(1) Physicist Enrico Fermi built the prototype of a nuclear reactor and worked to develop the first atomic bomb. Known as Chicago Pile-1 (CP-1), it was the world’s first artificial nuclear reactor. Its construction was part of the Manhattan Project, the Allied effort to create atomic bombs during World War II.
