(3) People living in Minamatacity in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan, were severely affected by mercury poisoning in 1956. It was caused by the release of methylmercury in the industrial waste water from the Chisso Corporation’s chemical factory, which continued from 1932to 1968. The disease was named Minamata disease after the place of its occurrence.
