A pipe can fill a tank in 12 minutes and an other pipe in 15 minutes, but a third pipe can empty it in 5 minutes. The first two pipes are kept opened for 4 minutes in the beginning and then the third pipe is also opened. In what time will the cistern emptied?

Solution:

Total work by A + B in 4 min = 20
Total work by A + B & C in 1 min = −1
∴ Total time taken by C to empty the tank =

20/1

= 20 min.
