Find the length of the string bound on a cylindrical tank whose base diameter and height are

5{1/11}m

and 48 cm respectively. The string makes exactly four complete turns round the cylinder, while its two ends touch the tank's top and bottom.

Solution:

the base circumference

= 2π r = 2 × { 22 }/ { 7 } × { 56 } /{ 11 } × { 1 } /{ 2 } = 16 { cm }

∴ AM = length of one complete turn

= √ { 16 ^ { 2 } + 12 ^ { 2 } } = 20 { cm }

∴ total length = 4 × 20 = 80 cm
