If X : Y : Z = 1 : 2 : 3 and, X2 + Y2 + Z2 = 224, then what is the value of X + Y + Z?

Solution:

Let the value of X, Y and Z be a, 2a and 3a
⇒

\X^2+\Y^2+\Z^2

= 224
⇒

\a^2+(2\a)^2+(3\a)^2=224

⇒

14\a^2=224

⇒

\a^2=16

⇒ a = 4
⇒ X + Y + Z = a + 2a + 3a = 6a = 24
∴ The value of (X + Y + Z) is 24.
