A mixture has milk and water in the ratio (by volume) of 8 : 3 If 3 litres of water is added to it, then new ratio of milk and water becomes 2 : 1. What are the quantities of milk and water respectively in the mixture initially?

Tips & Tricks
Let the quantity of water initially be 3x.
⇒ Milk = 8x
⇒

{3\x+3}/{8\x}=1/2

⇒ 6x + 6 = 8x
⇒ x = 3
⇒ The quantities of milk in the mixture initially = 8x = 24 litres
⇒ The quantities of water in the mixture initially = 3x = 9 litres
∴ The quantities of milk and water respectively in the mixture initially are 24 litres and 9 litres.
