Three salesmen named X, Y and Z sell 268 phones during a week. X sells 12 phones less than Z. Y sells half the number of phones sold by Z. If a total of 268 phones have been sold during the week, how many phones has salesman Z sold?

Solution:

According to the given information,
X + Y + Z = 268
X sells 12 phones less than Z
X = Z – 12
Y sells half the number of phones sold by Z

Y = Z \/ 2

Substituting ‘X’ and ‘Y’ in ‘X + Y + Z = 268’

Z -12 + Z\/ 2 + Z = 268

2Z -24 + Z + 2Z \/2 = 268

5Z – 24 = 536
5Z = 560
Z = 112
Salesman ‘Z’ sold 112 phones.
Hence, “112” is the correct answer.
