A circuit having power factor of 0.8 consumes 40 W. What will be the value of reactive power (in VAR) of the circuit?

Solution:

Reactive power = Apparent power × sin ϕ
= (Active power/cos ϕ) × sin ϕ
cos ϕ = power factor = 0.8
sin ϕ = 0.6

\VAR=\watt/{\cos \ϕ}×\sin\ϕ

=40/0.8×0.6

= 30 VAR
