What will be the value of reactive power (in VAR) of a circuit having power factor of 0.5, when the apparent power of the circuit is 80 VA?

Solution:

Given data,
Power factor cos ϕ = 0.5

∴\sinϕ=√{1-\cos^2ϕ}

=√{1-0.25}

⇒ sin ϕ = 0.866
Reactive power = S × sin ϕ
= 80 × 0.866 = 69.28 VAR.
