Operating an electrical power generator produces large amounts of heat that must be removed to maintain efficiency. Air, water and oil have all been used for coding. But hydrogen's low density, high specific heat and thermal conductivity have it a superior coolant for this application. So hydrogen is used in large alternator mainly to cool the machine.
