For a beam with rectangular cross section, under a known shear force will have a shear stress distributed parabolically, with zero values at extreme ends and the maximum value of the shear stress is located at the neutral axis of the beam. The neutral axis of a cross section is the axis at which the value of the normal stress and strain are equal to zero.
