Calculate the diameter of a pipe of 32000 m long, if it is equivalent to another pipe of 0.2 m diameter and 1000 m long.

Solution:

In both the cases head losses must be equal

h_\f={8Q^2\fL}/{π^2gD^5}

{8Q \f_1L_1}/{π^2gd_1 5}={8Q_e\f_eL_e}/{π^2gd_e 5}

L_1/{d_1 5}=L_e/{d_e5}

32000/{d_1 5}=1000/(0.2)^5

[32000/1000×(0.2)^5]^{1/5}=d_1

d_1=0.4\m
