Hydraulic Grade Line (HGL)
It is the line which joins the peizometric head at various points in flow.
Peizometric head $=\left(\frac{\mathit{P}}{\mathit{w}}+\mathit{Z}\right)$
Total Energy Line (TEL)
The line which joints total energy is known as TEL.
Total head $=\frac{\mathit{P}}{\mathit{w}}+\frac{{\mathit{V}}^2}{2\mathit{g}}+\mathit{Z}$
Hence, the total energy line lies over the hydraulic gradient line by an amount equal to Velocity head, $\frac{{\mathit{v}}^2}{2\mathit{g}}$
