Two numbers are in the ratio of $4:9$
Mean proportional between them is 24
Formula used:
If a and b are two numbers, then mean proportional $=\sqrt{}\left(\mathit{a}\times \mathit{b}\right)$
Calculation:
Let the two numbers be 4 x and 9 x
Mean proportional $=\sqrt{}\left(4\mathit{x}\times 9\mathit{x}\right)$
$\Rightarrow 24=\sqrt{}\left(36{\mathit{x}}^2\right)$
$\Rightarrow 24=6\mathit{x}$
$\Rightarrow \mathit{x}=4$
First number $=4\mathit{x}=4\times 4=16$
Second number $=9\mathit{x}=9\times 4=36$
Positive difference $=36-16=20$
