A train passes a man standing at a 120 m long platform in 5 seconds. The train takes 10 seconds to completely pass the platform. Find the length and speed of the train.

120 m, 24 m/s

Validate

Solution:

(1) Let the length of the train be xmeters and the speed be y m/s.

∴ x/y= 5

⇒ x = 5y
Again length of train and platformtogether = (x + 120) m

∴{ x + 120}/y= 10

⇒ x + 120 = 10y
⇒ 5y + 120 = 10y

⇒y = 120/5= 24

∴ Length of the train = 5 × 24 m =120 m and speed = 24 m/s
