Two chords of length 8 cm and 6 cm are drawn on the same side of the center of a circle of radius 5 cm. What is the distance between the chords?

Solution:

In triangle OBE,

OE =√ {OB^2 -EB^2} = √{5^2 - 4 ^2}= 3cm

In triangle OFD,

OF =√{OD^2 - FD^2 }=√ {5^2 - 3^2 }=4cm

So, the distance between thechords = 4 – 3 = 1 cm
