John travelled 240 km at a certain speed and then another 192 km at a speed faster than the initial speed by 8 km/h. If the entire trip took 10 hours, find his initial speed.

Solution:

(3) Let the initial speed of John bex km/h
∴ According to the question,

240 /x+192/{x+8} =10

⇒ 240(x + 8) + 192x = 10(x² + 8x)

⇒10x² – 352x – 1920 = 0

⇒x = 40, – 24/5

By ignoring the negative value, weget the initial speed of John = 40km/h
