If (x – 1) is one of the factors of

x^3 + 2x^2 – 2x – 1 = 0

Then th quadratic equation, which is also a factor is:

$x^2 – 3x – 1$
$x^2 + 3x + 1$
$x^2 + 3x – 1$
$x^2 – 3x + 1$

Solution:

x^3 +2x2 – 2x – 1 = x^3 + 3x^2 – x^2– 3x + x -1

= x (x^2 + 3x + 1) – (x^2 + 3x + 1)

= (x – 1)( x^2 + 3x + 1)

Therefore, “

x^2 + 3x + 1

” is also afactor of

x^3 + 2x^2 – 2x – 1 = 0.
