Four years ago, the ratio between the ages of Taani and Ananya was 4 : 5. The ratio between their present ages is 14 : 17. What will be Ananya's age 5 years hence?

Solution:

(1) Let Tanni’s present age be 14xyears and Ananya’s present age be17x years.
Then, 4 years ago, their ages were

{14X- 4 }/{17 X-4 }=4/5

⇒5(14x − 4) = 4(17x − 4)

⇒ 70x – 20 = 68x − 16
⇒ 70x – 68x = 20 − 16
⇒ x = 2
Therefore, Ananya’s present age
= 17 × 2 = 34 years
Ananya’s age after 5 years= 34 + 5 = 39 years
