A pipe can fill a tank in 2.4 hours and another pipe can empty the full tank in 1.6 hours. If tank is completely filled and both pipes are opened simultaneously, then 450 litre of water is emptied from the tank in 2.5 hours. What is the capacity of tank (in litres)?

Solution:

(1) Part of tank that become emptyin one hour

=10/16- 10/ 24=5/24

∴ Time taken to empty the tank

=24/5

hours
Quantity of water removed per hour

=450/2.5= 180 litres

Capacity of the tank =

24/5× 180 =864

litres
