A mixture of milk and water consists of 40% water. The addition of 45 litre of milk makes the percentage of milk 78% in the mixture. Find out the original quantity of mixture.

Solution:

(3) Let the original quantity ofmixture = x litre
Original quantity of water = 40% ofx = 0.4x litre
Original quantity of milk = 60% of x= 0.6x litre
New quantity of milk = (0.6x + 45)litre
Quantity of mixture after adding 45litres of milk = (x + 45) litre
Now,

{0.6x +45}/{x+ 45}= 0.78

⇒0.78x + 35.1 = 0.6x + 45
⇒ 0.18x = 9.9 ⇒ x = 55
∴Original quantity of mixture = 55litre
